Volcan Fuego erupting over Antigua
Originally uploaded by amie1.

My sister is in Guatemala and took this picture. Amazing how life seems to be during events such as this. When you could be facing the end of your life — or the possibility. Such that she took a picture when she was much closer a few weeks ago and who would have known that it was so close to erupting. Anyway just a thought.

Dear Family and Friends,

We hope your holiday is merry and bright and that this letter finds you well and happy.

This year has been an eventful one for us, beginning with the arrival of our daughter Lily in January. Lily has big, blue eyes, is sweet and smiley and thinks Oscar is the funniest and most wonderful person ever. Lily has recently begun crawling and pulling herself up on furniture. Is it just us, or does the second baby actually grow faster? And for those of you who are wondering, Lily is not allergic to milk (like Oscar) which made Nursing Marlene very happy indeed.

Oscar turned two in March and is very much a toddler. His most often-used phrase is “I do it myself!” And (sigh) we try to let him. Ah, independence! His love for cars, trucks and trains continues, but has widened to include puzzles (mostly of cars, trucks and trains), Legos and wrecking balls (?). Oscar is 98% an excellent big brother to Lily and the other 2% is so miniscule, it’s hardly worth mentioning. It’s really cozy to wake up to him greeting her in the morning, “Hi Lily, Hi!” and to hear her laugh in return.

Marlene loves being the mother of two—now. The first six months were pretty tough for everyone, but Marlene discovered that a daily mommy nap, one-on-one time with kids and energy-burning outdoor time are all really good things. Marlene continues to enjoy her bimonthly book club (a stellar read this year was Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmond) and weekly date nights with Phil. Marlene also enjoys having a doll, I mean a baby girl, to dress.

Phil keeps busy between school, jobs, family and his church calling—wait—didn’t we say this last year? Phil has also added to his schedule (because who needs time to shower?) teaching a parenting class at Cal State and doing therapy at LDS Family Services; he thoroughly enjoys both. He received his Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy in September and is now working on completing his PhD. Phil’s newest passion (besides his Treo) is Flickr.com—a website where you can download photos and view others’ as well. It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and family.

And on that note, we’d love to hear from you! And if you’re ever in the area, we’ve got a really comfortable sofa bed.

Love,

I have found a site that has several LDS Portuguese Hymns. I would love to find something that contains all the Brazilian Portuguese hymns for Latter-Day Saints. It brings back strong and good memories of my mission in the Brazil, Londrina Mission. What a wonderful time of life? Striving to do what is right and bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to others.

If anyone has any information on a better website for Portuguese LDS hymns – I just need the words not the music. I would also be interested in this for additional languages as well, mainly Spanish and Swedish.

Marlene discovered this website and we think it is great. It breaks down every movie into sections: sexual content, violence, profanity, drug and alcohol, spirituality, positive elements, and so forth. This website also includes music, TV shows, and other entertainement. Marlene googled looking for a description of “The Family Stone” and in a round about way came to this site. I love Google.

Check it out.

I had a problem with the flickr organizr and through this excellent forum. I found the answer to my questions. Check it out.

Firefox – Rediscover the Web

Excellent web browser! That’s it. Plain and simple. Better than Internet Explorer, even with the additions that Microsoft is now adding to the IE browser. I’ve tried them out and they don’t seem to work nearly as efficiently as the extensions of firefox. (Tabbed browsing is the future and they are trying to jump on the bandwagon). Firefox is continually changing and progressing which makes it so much more attractive as a web browser. And 1.5 is excellent.

blip.tv (beta)

If you are interested in hosting media files (Both WMA and QT files) this is an excellent free service that I have found to be very useful. It also is pretty clean, thus far from what I have seen. Don’t quote me 100%.

I have listed a link on the left-hand side of our family blog. Have fun.
we are listed under http://marandpip1.blip.tv/.

This seems like it might make AOL interesting again. I have had a bad taste in my mouth for awhile with AOL, but I love Google. I have also been really loving the Firefox 1.5 web browswer. Anyone that hasn’t switched from IE to firefox is really missing an opportunity for more excellent web browsing. I love the extensions (e.g., flickrfox, NoScript, AdBlock, etc.)

I fear that maybe this might turn out badly for Google, of which I worry they may lose in the long run.

This is an interesting article about the ethical issues surrounding stem-cellresearch and the cloning articles that have come out in recent years (in particular the South Korean research).

Unfortunately, I find this an almost overwhelming debate about what we should do. But I find it disheartening that there is coming out some evidence that some of the research has “contained fabricated evidence.”

Ethical integrity is important for scientific research.

Oscar would just love this picture. He will love this little town. I remember my little town on a table at home for my many micro machine cars. Loved it. I wonder where those cars are now.

I enjoy Simonedc’s pictures that she posts. She has some beautiful pictures.
