A few memories from our family to you.

My sister, Sarah, sent me an email yesterday informing me that Marlene and I have a wedding picture that I posted on Flickr up on a wiki about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You’ll need to scroll down to the section that talks about temples and preparation for marriage and you’ll see us. This was one of the excellent photos taken by our wedding photographer, Jonas Otsuji. His professional website is FeelThePhoto.com. He does wedding throughout the world and his philosophy is based on the idea of letting people enjoy their weddings and then you’ll get the best pictures as opposed to making them stand up and do lots of unnatural poses. We loved him as a photographer. He was recommended to us by some of our friends, Hiedi and Josh Blackwelder.Link to photo itself on the wiki.  And then here is the photo posted to my flickr account. This is a link to the album set of our wedding photos on Flickr. *I apologize for the lack of posts lately — I am trying to recover our pictures and music from my external hard drive that accidently erased, which was the only copy that I had. I’ll post about New York and Philly and Thanksgiving soon. I want to have the pictures to do so.

In my work as therapist, I’ve often referred to this song for clients suffer from issues related to substance abuse, violence, and depression can play in their lives. It is also a way to help connect with some adolescents. Last night as a meeting with an adolescent, we talked about who wrote this song and that struck my interest somewhat. I said it was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, but that I preferred the Johnny Cash version and the video for Cash’s version.I was thinking about it and so I looked the video up this morning to watch again. Check out this video. Johnny Cash’s Hurt.[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/SmVAWKfJ4Go" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]My response to the video was one of respect and admiration for Cash’s openness and honestly regarding the fame and fortune that he had attained in life, but when the end of life nears there are some things that matter more than the money, fame, records. He refers to his love of June Cash, who had died just prior to their deaths the following year. He loved her so much. Johnny died 3 months following June’s death in 2003. We loved the movie “Walk the Line” with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. I just read that their home that they lived in for over 20 years, which was being renovated by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, burned down. Hurt was filmed there.

I also read this about Trent Reznor’s response to the video by Johnny Cash. I thought it was cool.In an interview with Alternative Press, Reznor admitted that when Rubin first asked if Cash could cover his song, he was “flattered” but worried that “the idea sounded a bit gimmicky.” The power of Cash’s cover didn’t fully hit Reznor until he saw the video:

“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning—different, but every bit as pure.”

See Trent Reznor’s version here

Great game by the Utah Jazz last night to beat out the Los Angeles Lakers. I always like seeing Kobe shut down and the Lakers lose. As my childhood NBA team, I have fond memories of the team and love to see them now as they regrown and established themselves as a contender in the league. Since Karl Malone (joined the Lakers and then retired) and John Stockton (retired) and starting fresh, the Jazz have had some struggles in reestablishing themselves and then last year was excellent. Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, Andre Kirelinko have all had great seasons so far again this year. Additionally, Ronnie Brewer, Ronnie Price and others have stepped up and made significant contributions for the team.

I can’t wait to see them continue their quest of success this year. What does this say about our storied coach, Jerry Sloan? It says great things about his ability to coach and guide young players into greatness. His ability to coach is magnificent.

The college of my youth when I was 17-21 years of age, Utah State College, is going to becoming a university soon and they just recently unveiled at a ceremony on campus what the logos will be. See for yourself below…

What do you think? I found the first U interesting and sort of ugly at first but then seeing the shape of Utah in the middle somehow made the U seem a little more endearing. For more info on this click some of the below options.

Logo Presentation (PC – .exe file format) — Download here. Or the official UVSC news release.

See the official UVU webpage. Still in its infancy but picture is pretty nostalgic of St. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band.

I’m interested to see the rivalry between UVU and BYU intensify, especially on the basketball court.

This is a British Christian, Dave Gobbett, talking about happiness and how in our lives we can get overwhelmed with the desire to attain material possessions, however, does the lead us to the happiness that we are seeking eternally. He uses the example of Frank Abagnale, Jr. from “Caught Me If You Can” and discusses how we want to seek for things and then when we get those things we don’t feel satisfied and we want more. That true happiness doesn’t come from things or the possession of those things — it is getting closer to Jesus Christ and learning how we can find joy with our families.

Excellent speaker. He is from the Nottingham University Christian Union. Read more here www.whoishe.org.uk.

A picture began circulating in November. It should be ‘The Picture of the Year,’ or perhaps, ‘Picture of the Decade.’ It won’t be. In fact, unless you obtained a copy of the US paper which published it, you probably would never have seen it.

The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander Armas, who is being operated on by surgeon named Joseph Bruner.

The baby was diagnosed with spina bifida and would not survive if removed from his mother’s womb. Little Samuel’s mother, Julie Armas, is an obstetrics nurse in Atlanta . She knew of Dr. Bruner’s remarkable surgical procedure. Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville , he performs these special operations while the baby is still in the womb.

During the procedure, the doctor removes the uterus via C-section and makes a small incision to operate on the baby. As Dr.Bruner completed the surgery on Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny, but fully developed hand through the incision and firmly grasped the surgeon’s finger. Dr.Bruner was reported as saying that when his finger was grasped, it was the most emotional moment of his life, and that for an instant during the procedure he was just frozen, totally immobile.

The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity. The editors titled the picture, ‘Hand of Hope.’ The text explaining the picture begins, ‘The tiny hand of 21-week- old fetus Samuel Alexander Armas emerges from the mother’s uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner as if thanking the doctor for the gift of life.’

Little Samuel’s mother said they ‘wept for days’ when they saw the picture. She said, ‘The photo reminds us pregnancy isn’t about disability or an illness, it’s about a little person.’Samuel was born in perfect health, the operation 100 percent successful.

This is a hilarious little kid throwing a tantrum that is bound to make you laugh. Someone in my class today showed it when we were talking about parenting. Funny. It is from ABC’s America’s Funniest Videos.

I remember that my grandfather Scoville (Ellsworth Earl Scoville) was often stated that he reminded people of J. Golden Kimball. I remember his stories including lots of “hells” and “damns” that I too have thought and said that about Grandpa Scoville. Today I stumbled across a few sites that talk about J. Golden and have some of his quotes.

Here are a few pictures of my Grandpa Scoville.

Ells and Annetta Scoville

I think there are some similarities, although not a perfect match. Here are some of my favorite quotes from J. Golden Kimball.

“Cut me off from the church? They can’t do that! I repent too damn fast.”

“I may not walk the straight and the narrow, but I sure in hell try to cross it as often as I can!”

“I understand you brethren can’t go on missions because you swear too much. You can overcome it. Hell, I did.’ ….

See the official J. Golden Kimball website, or others. Grandpa Bill’s site. Here are few more quotes. A memorial about J. Golden.
