A few memories from our family to you.

The kids and Marlene went to Pumpkinland and had great time. Here are some pictures.

See Marlene’s post about Pumpkinland.

Then we also took some pictures of the kids before they went trick-or-treating. Marlene did an amazing job making Henry’s Frog Prince costume. She always makes one costume at least per year. Oscar wanted to be a Knight and Lily was Cinderella. You can’t see it in all of the pictures but Lily was devasted when I said she needed to wear her coat. It was going to ruin her outfit; it didn’t matter how cold it got. She was hysterical and stubborn. She may have been tired before we even went. Oscar was a good sport and was only able to trick-or-treat the closest houses in our block because he had cough so we didn’t want to keep him out long. Henry as well was upset that he had to wear the costume; especially the hat, however, when we put him in front of the mirror, he got a huge smile on his face. Enough talk and here are some of the pictures.

Henry and Maisie

Marlene took this photo. Isn’t it fabulous?

Henry and Maisie

Scoville Family Newsletter 2008

This year has been an eventful one on many fronts for our family, and although there have been trials, the greatest of which was the loss of Phil’s dad in May, we’ve been wonderfully blessed.

We started the New Year with the birth of Henry Rodger in February. Oscar gave shouts of joy when he was born, while Lily asked, “Where’s my girl baby?” Though we may have gotten off to a rough start, Henry is a favorite with all of us. As we go to press, Henry has begun crawling and talking, sort of. (“Was that ‘doggie’? I think he’s saying ‘doggie!’”)

Lily is three and what we fondly call sweet and sour. She enjoys playing with friends, attending preschool and her BYU dance class, and all things pink and princess. She hates doing all the work, as in, “Mom, why do I have to do all the work?”

Oscar(5) started kindergarten this year, and though it was hard switching schools, has acclimated very well, and is very proud of all the new things he’s learning, like how penguins live at the South Pole, but Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. Oscar loves coloring and anything Star Wars.

For the past two years, Phil has been completing his PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy at Brigham Young University. A perk that came with finishing his course work last April was his internship, employment with Outback Therapeutic Expeditions, a wilderness therapy program for troubled youth. The job suits Phil because he gets to be out of doors, which he loves, but mostly because he’s just an overgrown teenager himself. Phil also enjoys a part-time job doing therapy with foster kids.

Marlene tries to take time to breathe between shuttling kids everywhere they need to go, trying out new recipes, blogging, reading, writing and cleaning three bathrooms.

Because we felt a new baby and a new job weren’t enough changes for one year, we decided to also buy our first home. Though leaving our close-knit neighborhood in Provo was difficult, there are so many things we love about our new home and neighborhood in Orem, maybe most of which is a much bigger house and yard, complete with fruit trees and a large garden.

And what would a new house be without a dog? Maisie, a 6-year-old miniature schnauzer, joined our family right before Christmas.

We hope that this letter finds you happy and well. We love the Lord and are grateful for the Savior’s love and guidance for us in our lives.

With love,

Phil, Marlene, Oscar, Lily, and Henry Scoville

Marlene will be pleased to know this; if she didn’t already. Well maybe Senator Clinton will now be the Secretary of State for Obama. We’ll have the Clinton’s in our lives for yet a while longer.

Marlene and I signed a half a million documents at the title company today. We are excited to getting the key tomorrow after the transaction clears.

We’ll be official first-time homeowners and residents of Orem, Utah and the Lakeview Stake. Marlene’s old neighborhood.

Henry was a dream boat. He played, cooed, and practically entertained himself for the during of the stack papers we had to review and sign. If that doesn’t scare you away from buying a house maybe the paper that says we’ll finish pay the loan in 2034 or something like that if we don’t do any prepayment. Ouch. Or the fact that the overall total of the purchase ends up being over 2X the amount of the house.

We had a great time tonight at the Brian Regan show at Thanksgiving Point. We attended night 2 of 3 here in the Utah Valley. He was funny and made both Marlene and I laugh almost nonstop the whole night. We were with Greg and Missy Giles and another couple that came with them. We all thought he was pretty funny.

See a small video clip of him performing on David Letterman. You’ll love it.

His opening act Kermit Apio was also very funny. Check out some of his audio samples on his homepage. He is clean and funny.

My birthday passed this year, last Saturday, and I was pleasantly surprised to have a great family/friends dinner at Tucanos, my favorite Brazilian Barbeque restaurant. Marlene invited friends and family to come and celebrate in a surprise dinner. Brandon and Dayna Cahoon came and it was great to see them. My mom came and she helped around the house for several hours. And Spencer, Jonene, and girls all came to dinner. It was great. We enjoyed the meat, rice, beans, farofa, guarana, and fried pineapple. I love brazilian food. It is absolutely amazing. I could eat rice and beans and farofa daily.

Join Tucanos Birthday Club – You get a free meal once a year in the month of your birthday. It is amazing. There are several locations in Provo, Salt Lake City, and Albequrque, NM.

Thus, it was a great day. I also received calls, cards, and messages from JP and MaryAnn, Nate and Nicole, Seth and Shayla, Amie and Mat, and many websites that I’ve signed up with over the years. Many that I haven’t used in many, many years.

Thanks, Marlene. You are the best.

Hope the househunting will end soon. We did a home inspection of a house we are interested and we’re still debating our decision on what we want to do. We’re waiting for the official report and how to proceed from there.

Well it is about time that I post something about our trip to California. We loved seeing all of our friends and ward members in Redlands, California. We stayed with some good friends, the LeSueurs. Oscar and Lily loved playing with Claire. We enjoyed our few days there.

The kids

We had to switch out our rental van from Enterprise because the air conditioning didn’t work. Although a hassle to do there, we were compensated handsomely. They took care of us and I’d recommend Enterprise to anyone. They have excellent rates and also great customer service, at least the South Provo, Utah office.

Despite that we enjoyed riding in the 2007 Toyota Sienna as opposed 2008 Dodge Caravan. The seats were much more comfortable.

We then spent the next several days at Disneyland. We enjoyed the park very much.

We stayed at the Paradise Pier hotel. We enjoyed breakfast with many Disney Characters at Goofy’s Kitchen.

We enjoyed the pool at both Paradise Pier hotel and the Disneyland hotel.

We loved Disneyland and Downtown Disney. We loved the several Jamba Juices that we got while there.

We also enjoyed the trip thoroughly. And you can best see our experience through the photos we took. Check out flickr photo set here. It is large.
