A few memories from our family to you.

This is intended for my family members who are hosting their blogs at scovilleclan.com. I was writing this up for Rachel today and thought that there are some ideas that could be helpful for other family members who already have bits and pieces of this information. Hope that this helps.

So you should have blog already set up at scovilleclan.com. If you’d like one send me an email via the chat link at the top of this page. I’ll set it up as username.scovilleclan.com or you can also get there by going to scovilleclan.com/username.

Click here to begin in the admin section.

Admin URL: http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin
Username: admin
Password: ******
(whatever that is, I’ll send it to you when I set up your blog).

A few optional settings that I’ve found helpful with my wordpress blog.

Optional setting changes***
First, if you’d like to add your flickr photos to your blog posts. This is the best feature I’ve found for it. I love it. You need configure with your blog getting authorization from flickr to make the connection work. I can help you if you’d like but I will need your flickr username and password.

Or you can do it yourself, you access this admin section of the blog by
going here and following the instructions provided. Most of the default
stuff will work great for you.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=silaspartners/flickr/class-admin.php
(here you have to give your blog authorization to pull your flickr photos).

Second, I would recommend choosing a theme that you’d like and then
emailing it to me and I’ll get it set up for you. It is simple you need
to upload it via this page
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/index.php?page=oneclick/oneclick.php.
You can do that through the admin section and then go to
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/themes.php. Once
you’ve selected your new theme from this page
http://themes.wordpress.net/. You go to the upload link I just gave and
upload it then go to the theme page and select it as you option of
choice.

Third, set your blog to get updated on your facebook profile by clicking this link and following the instructions.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wordbook

Fourth, having your post sent out to group of people – like the family. It is fun to hear from you and what your post.
First you need to go to this link and review the options and make
any changes you’d like and how you’d like your email to look when you
send it. What you get from Amie or Sarah is what this is. If you want
it to look like my emails, let me know. It is a different service. With
this option, you can have the emails sent out once a week, hourly, or
other, just check the options.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=subscribe2/subscribe2.php
Second, then go to this link
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/edit.php?page=subscribe2/subscribe2.php
and you’ll be able add who you’d like to have the email sent to. I
recommend family and some close friends who wouldn’t mind getting a
regular update. You can put me scoville [at] byu.edu and mar
marlenescoville [at] gmail.com. Follow the instructions as given.

These are just a few options to begin with and then you start to write and post information.
Click on this link and it will get you there.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/post-new.php

You can add posts, pages, and links (so you could put me scovilleclan.com for example, as well as any other site, espn.com or google.com if you’d like).

Here is your starting blog page. (username).scovilleclan.com or scovilleclan.com/(username). It is
pretty generic right now so I can’t wait to see some changes.
Here is your starting administration page.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/index.php. It is
called your dashboard.
To install new themes and plugins go to this page.
http://www.scovilleclan.com/(username)/wp-admin/index.php?page=oneclick/oneclick.php
and you just follow the instructions there.

You can always view your site by clicking the view site link at the top
of the page or when creating a page or post you can always hit the
preview button to see what the page will look like. Just click the
browser back page when you are finished.
Hope that this helps and isn’t too terribly confusing.

And then once we’ve got some stuff there you can email the family to
let them know about it. Some friendly helpful beginning advice to use
for your blog (it is wordpress BTW). Check this site for help. If you ever have a question or feature request for it please let me know and I’ll see what I can do to get it to work.

There are alot of plugins and features that can be added to the blog as
well as hundreds and thousands of themes for your blog. You can google
search for them but my favorite site for both is the wordpress database
at www.wordpress.org/extend and then click plugins http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ or for themes http://themes.wordpress.net/.

Wow! That took some time but I think I have the site up and running again. Finally, it has taken me a few weeks to figure out how to transfer from one hosting service to another. What a pain! I could/should have just stayed with the old Dreamhost service for all the pain, but I guess it was a learning environment. Hope not too many links are busted. Please let me know if so.

I am trying to get my siblings and parents blogs up now. I think I have Spencer’s scovilleclan.com/slsjps, Sarah’s at scovilleclan.com/sarahsblog, Dad’s blog scovilleclan.com/dadsblog, and the Muirs blog scovilleclan.com/julietteaaron, but I am working on Amie and Mat’s. And Marlene’s is a little funky too.

We should be able to post our Easter pictures soon. We had a great time down in Delta; visiting with my relatives from Canada.

I have been using wordpress now for the last year and have really enjoyed using it. It is a blog software that can be altered and adjusted and I really love using it. I have had a bit of a challenge finding a really good system that pulled my iTunes music from both my iPod and from iTunes on my computer. I have been using iTunesSpy but had lots of problems and it has been okay, but a few days ago I stumbled across a really cool and easy system that lets you update this information from your computer iTunes and your iPod (using either iScrobbler or another few downloads from last.fm’s download section) and also several fairly simple adjustments and additions to wordpress widgets (using Scrobble, Scrobbler, Run for Cover, etc.) You can see examples of Run for Cover (i.e., favorite cd’s of the week heading) and Scrobble (10 most recent listens on in our iTunes or iPod) in my sidebar.

You know how I love music and this is one quick and simple way to add my musical tastes and interests to our blog (our’s wordpress) but from what I could tell you could get your chart information or a quilt of the cd covers as is demonstrated above.

I sent out several invitations if you have questions about it, please let me know.

I have thus far been thoroughly impressed with wordpress and the settings which allow for a great deal of alteration and improvement on the blog and its admin settings. I really love it. I am still learning but at least it allows me to work without having a great deal of html or coding knowledge.

I just wrote a long post and then my safari browser crashed. Depressing. It was nice about Gone with the Wind, Oscar and Lily, Wars and Rumors of Wars. If I get the heart to write it again I’ll try but I am to tired tonight.

I wish wordpress had a feature like the google gmail save auto option.

This is another quick musing of mine. I have recently made the move to a mac from my pc. With it came iWeb, I am wondering what anyone’s thoughts are on being able to use iWeb pages that I make and figuring out how to use them with blogger or with another service. Let me, is it even worth it. I might just use Wordpress. I seem to like that alot.
