A few memories from our family to you.

qtrax

A new service that I just heard about is available for download today called QTRAX; however, it appears that there may have been some poor planning decisions because some of the deals with record companies have not been finalized yet. See the following article describing the “hold” placed on the service by excutives. We’ll hopefully see this service succeed. I’d love to see it work and artists getting fully compensated for their work and also the record companies. No cost downloads and unlimited plays on your computer and MP3 players for now *(no iPods until April 15).

Also the service is now only a PC-based service. It will be available for a Mac version in mid-March.

This news is hitting the blogosphere with abandon. Many are wondering if this is a possible business model that will succeed. I think it has great potential. I hope it works. I love free music.

My favorite Webbrowsers for Macs:

My Top 3:

1) Safari – Apple has recently come out with the 3rd version of their famous Safari browser. It is very fast and runs great on the Mac. It doesn’t autosave your tabs and browsers as Firefox does so if it shuts down – you don’t have anything saved. But it is extremely quick.

2) Camino – this is a safari-like browser Mozilla corporation that has incorporated the firefox extensions and browser restore feature into aSafari-looking browser. Excellent on speed.

3) Firefox – I love this browser for the PC. It runs a little slower on the mac but still does well. I prefer Safari or Camino over them. The extensions again are a great feature. Far and away better than internet explorer.

Honorable Mention:

4) Flock – I do love the Flock browser and it just updated to official 1.0 version. It has some great blogging, photo sharing (e.g., Flickr) and monitoring features, however, in so doing it uses up a lot RAM power. I have 2GB RAM on our Apple iMac at home and it still runs slower than both Safari and Firefox. It does seem to run slower on the Mac.

5) Opera – Is a fun browser that has a bittorrent service integrated with it. I have used it in the past but I have gone back to the old faithful for Macs = Safari. I love Safari for the Mac.

My favorite Webbrowsers for a PC:

1) Firefox – I love this browser for the PC. It runs great without bogging too much RAM space. Also it has great extensions that make browsing fun on the internet. Many have made into the firefox software over time but there continue to be improvements and innovations that move the internet browsers forward. Internet explorer just follows the leader for PC internet browsing.

2) Safari – Apple has recently come out with PC version of their famous Safari browser. It is very fast and runs well on the PC. There are few glitches – it doesn’t autosave your tabs and browsers as Firefox does so if it shuts down – you don’t have anything saved. But it is extremely quick. It is also still in its infancy for the PC – it is Safari 3 Beta version right now.

3) Flock – I do love the Flock browser and it just updated to official 1.0 version. It has some great blogging, photo sharing (e.g., Flickr) and monitoring features, however, in so doing it uses up a lot RAM power. I have 2GB RAM on our Apple iMac at home and it still runs slower than both Safari and Firefox. It does seem to run faster, slightly, on the PC.

4) Opera – Is a fun browser that has a bittorrent service integrated with it. I have used it in the past but I have gone back to the old faithful for PC’s = Firefox. I love firefox the most for PC.

I have found an excellent program for accomplishing some of what Adobe Acrobat Reader Professional does. Although not the same in everything it does serve as an excellent freeware to underline, highlight, edit, and leave notations on PDF files. I use it alot with my research. I no longer have to print all my articles off because I can highlight and mark up the PDF itself. Saves money and space. And with a free 2GB Flash Stick from Tigerdirect.com, you can’t beat it. See my post about it.

I’ve made a post about the Foxit Reader Program. There is a link in the second comment where you go to the FoxIt downloads section.

Or you can download it directly from the FoxIt Downloads Section.

Installation Instructions:

Question: How do I highlight in Adobe Acrobate Reader?

Answer: Yes, but only with the professional version. There is a free program, FoxIt Reader that does many of the same things and it is small enough that you can use it from your flash stick (hopefully, the free one from the above note).

Question: How do I get FoxIt Reader?

Answer: Download it from the above links. (Get the .exe version or you’ll need to unzip the .zip version.) Also if you want it on your flash stick, download the .exe program into your flash stick directory wherever you’d like it.

Question: How do I get it to open up and work with my PDF files? When I click on my PDF it still opens up with Acrobat Reader.

Answer: First of all, do you have the .exe FoxIt program file downloaded and where you want it and where you can find it through the  backend directory of your computer.

Second, now do have the PDF file you’d like to open downloaded and saved where you can get to it.

Third, Go to the PDF file icon. (Not the FoxIt .exe program). We’ll find it later.

Fourth, Right click on the PDF file and select "Open With" Option. And "choose program." (At first in the pop-up box, it will say that Adobe is the only option.)

Fifth, when the box is up look below all the available programs for the "browse" button.

Sixth, browse for the FoxIt .exe file that you downloaded and placed on your flash stick or whereever you put it.

Ta-Da. You should have the PDF open in FoxIt Reader. Good job!

Now you can you can use this from any PC computer. It just makes it easier than taking notes on paper or printing a copy and making notes on the article.

It will highlight, underline, edit, and notate. If it is an older file, the highlight option may not work because you can’t select text, but you can use the underline option and that works wonders.

Note: when you have made any modification with the free version (FoxIt puts a mark on the file). I don’t mind it but you may. So use it if you like.

Have fun for free (or pay the much lower price for FoxIt Reader Pro than Adobe Acrobate Reader Pro).

I just purchased Microsoft Office 2007 Pro edition for a steal of a deal. Regularly the purchase price is over $400 dollars. For the time being, if you can prove that you are student you can purchase the new Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate edition for $59.95. You must download the installation file (you can purchase a backup DVD with the software for $12). You only receive the ability to install the software on one machine at a time. If you do more, then the Product Key gets disabled.

You can get this deal from www.theultimatesteal.com.

To see if you are eligible, click here.

Also find out more about Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate Edition, click here. A few notable inclusions that I am excitd about (OneNote 2007, Access 2007, Groove 2007, and Publisher 2007). Those are in addition to the regulars (Word 2007, Powerpoint 2007, Excel 2007, Outlook 2007). There are other programs included as well.

Great steal. I’ve enjoyed it for the past day and half. This was also less expensive than the Pro Edition that I could have purchased from the BYU bookstore for $95 and that version had less programs (the main difference is that the program could be put on a desktop and a laptop legally). Lastly, this is a legitimate purchase from Microsoft.

Go get it if you are eligible.

I needed this function with Adobe Acrobat reader today for school. It doesn’t do it so I went web surfing and found a great program to save the annotations and things that you’ve written on a PDF so you don’t have to lose it, print it, and/or rewrite it again when you want to use it – Foxit 2.0. It is great. Enjoy.

Update November 5, 2007. I have created forum that allows you to find more programs that I’ve found useful. I will continue to update my program list there. Click here to get to the forum post for FoxIt Reader.

Also I have posted some specific directions on how to make this program work from your flash drive. Works best on PC but also a developmental version available for the mac.

I have been struggling to reinstall my windows XP operating system on my home computer tonight and am stuck right in the middle. I have successfully moved all the important files to a new disk drive (Seagate 300 GB) and removed the old partition but it now seems to freeze in the process. So basically, I am having trouble reinstalling the software.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem?
