A few memories from our family to you.

The kids and Marlene went to Pumpkinland and had great time. Here are some pictures.

See Marlene’s post about Pumpkinland.

Then we also took some pictures of the kids before they went trick-or-treating. Marlene did an amazing job making Henry’s Frog Prince costume. She always makes one costume at least per year. Oscar wanted to be a Knight and Lily was Cinderella. You can’t see it in all of the pictures but Lily was devasted when I said she needed to wear her coat. It was going to ruin her outfit; it didn’t matter how cold it got. She was hysterical and stubborn. She may have been tired before we even went. Oscar was a good sport and was only able to trick-or-treat the closest houses in our block because he had cough so we didn’t want to keep him out long. Henry as well was upset that he had to wear the costume; especially the hat, however, when we put him in front of the mirror, he got a huge smile on his face. Enough talk and here are some of the pictures.

We had a great morning adventure this week with my Aunt Jane and cousin Gary. I took Oscar and Lily with me. It was fantastic. We also brought home some copper covered rocks that we were given by the security guard. He was really nice and gave us lots of insights about the mine. One nugget was that it takes an hour to drive from where we were to the bottom of the mine. The speed limit for the road was 6 mph. Not too fast.

Here is a video about some of the hypotheses regarding what happened and what they found so far in the Atlantic Ocean. I was sad to hear such news last week when I first heard about it. I hope good comes into the safety and development of the planes.

Over the last year, our lives have changed pretty significantly. To begin the year 2008, we found out my dad was sick with pancreatic cancer and knew that he wouldn’t be with us much longer. My wife then had our 3rd child, Henry in February 2008 just after we found out the news of my dad. We named him Henry Rodger Scoville, after my dad and Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency of LDS Church.

My dad loved Henry. He said to me that Henry had come as a blessing from our Father in Heaven to cheer my dad up during this stressful and painful time as his life winded down and the cancer became more severe. I know Henry cheered my dad up. My dad loved babies and children. He was eager to help calm crying babies and kids down. He did that for all of our children at one point or another.

My dad was also a very hard worker. He worked many late nights at the office in his attempts to take care of our family and also repay his debts to society that he had incurred. He was honest and kind.

He loved us very much and showed us more than he told us; but I don’t remember many swim meets where my dad wasn’t in the stands or a timer at the side of the pool supporting myself or a sibling. He also loved to watch us play water polo. My brother Spencer and I were the only ones in the family to play. I was grateful he was there and often holding our old video camera so we could watch the videos later. Hmmm. I wonder where those old tapes of ours are. It would be nice to see them transferred to DVD.

My dad also loved his rich heritage from farm life in Southern Alberta Canada. He lived in many small towns there but to name a few Magrath, Medicine Hat, and others. My grandfather was a rancher who worked the farm for most of his life until he worked for Goodyear (I believe) until he retired. My dad loved telling stories of his childhood and also hunting and shooting guns. I went out with my youngest sister and her fiance to shoot guns at the Delta shooting range a few weeks ago and it brought back many memories of shooting with my dad.

As I have received emails from my siblings over the last week or two, I’ve been reminded of the great example my father was for all of us. I literally cannot believe that it has been over a year since my father passed away from the cancer. I still remain glad that he didn’t have to suffer long with the intense pain he was experiencing, but it doesn’t change the fact that I miss him. I’m sure my siblings do too as well, and more so, my mother. We want the very best for her. She has managed life well and seems to be enjoying life in Delta for as long as she would like.

I began a full-time job at that time; working for Outback Therapeutic Expeditions. I really enjoyed my year with them. I love wilderness therapy. I believe that working with adolescent youth is a crucial time period where influence to help boys and girls at the age is more effective than waiting until they are young adults or adults with their own families to learn to overcome their challenges and problems.

I am now in the process of finishing up my dissertation and comprehensive exam revisions. I know my dad would be proud of me and that is not related to my success but that he’d feel that I’m getting closer to knowing what I want to do with my life and pursuing it. He was a great supporter of getting as much education as possible.

I miss my dads hugs. I know I’m thirty, married, and father of three children and I love all the hugs I can get, but there is something different about getting a hug from your father or mother.

I’m grateful to be a part of a loving family. We had a great weekend in Richfield with my brothers and oldest sister and their families with my mom for Memorial Day weekend. We returned home last night but this weekend is special. I know he didn’t serve in any war, but I’m wanting to honor him and the great legacy of hope and faith that he has left for me and for my family. I hope that his example will be remembered by his siblings, my siblings, and all others that knew him.

I was reading scriptures with my son, Oscar, on the topic of Malachi when he was discussing the hearts of the children turn to the fathers and the hearts of the fathers to the children. He asked about Grandpa Scoville and said that he missed him. I told him I did too and I became choked up so we talked for a time about the role that grandparents play in our lives and then how we’ll have the opportunity to see them again. I’m grateful for the knowledge that we can see one another in the next life.

I hope my children can remember me with more fond memories than just me being upset with them for not putting away their toys or not getting ready for school fast enough. Makes me stop and think what are the messages I’m sending them about what is important in life and where does our focus need to be.

Happy Memorial Day to all those who are remembering soldiers who have died while serving our country and the cause of freedom throughout time. Thank you to all serving in the armed forces now.

Martin Luther King Memorial at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. This is the National Civil Rights Museum.

I went to the museum this afternoon after the conference sessions I was required to go see. No pictures could be taken within the museum; thus my pictures of just of the outside of the museum.

We only had a 30 minute window to go see through the many exhibits of which I was sad to have to rush through but it only opened at 1pm tomorrow afternoon and we need to leave for Nashville tomorrow to catch our flight.

My favorite part of the self-guided tour was to see the bus replica on which Rosa Park’s refused to give up her seat to a white man that eventually had her arrested for disobeying the law (at least for the time). I didn’t know that she and Dr. King were associates. I don’t know if they were before or after her arrest.

I also found it interesting how much distance Dr. Martin Luther King went to publish his message of non-violence and peace throughout the South. He graduated with his PhD from Boston University at age 26 in philosophy and theology. There were sit-ins and protests throughout the South – from Birmingham, AL to Memphis, TN to Washington, DC. I’ve always assumed that he did this much work but I just haven’t studied it. Seeing the jail cells and the hard work, Dr. King’s suffering for an important cause reminds me of the suffering and pain that the LDS Saints experienced when they were in first starting in the 1800’s in Missouri and across the uncivilized territory toward the desert now known as Utah.

A couple of other items that struck me while in the museum. Dr. King was shot in the face by a bullet that went through his right cheek and then his jaw. It then hit his spinal cord and got lodged in his shoulder. Jesse Jackson was near him when he got shot standing on the balcony. He was in room 306 in the Lorraine Motel. Apparently this was a room that he stayed at often when he was in Memphis.

I was also particularly touched by a transcript provided of a conversation between Dr. King and his wife, Coretta King, while Dr. King was in prison. He inquired about the kids. They were courteous and kind to each other. There was much love, care, and appreciation.

Dr. King was an example to all of us about keeping his ideals high and speaking out for those things that need to be addressed. He was open, honest, and non-violent in his efforts to address serious problems such as labor and wages problems.

You can read more about his life on wikipedia.

I am saying hello from the blues and rock’n'roll city of Memphis. I’d like to go to the Civil Rights Museum sometime while I’m here. I’d also like to go to the Music Museum here. Graceland is in the area which would be a lot of fun to go see. Maybe tomorrow.
Thus far while I’ve been here we’ve had a good time enjoying the AAMFT Conference. I presented my poster presentation this morning. I came away with a list of people that were interested in receiving more information about my research on anxiety disorders and their associated costs. I guess a lot depends on the people that are interested in the research.

Maybe even though one researcher or journal might not be interested in my research; maybe another would be. Even if Family Relations didn’t accept the article on anxiety disorders; maybe I’ll submit it to Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy and see what they suggest.
With that said, I would like to say that of the presentations I’ve been to so far I have enjoyed a couple of them very much. One by my colleague and friend, Jeff Jackson and Carlo, a Maryland student, was on ethical decision making using a systems-oriented approach was excellent. Jeff, you’re thorough and excellent. It reminded me just how much ethical issues are not easy to figure out and how to handle and address them in an agency setting, such as I am doing in my clinical work at Outback right now.

Another presentation was pleasant on “Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll: The Joys of Working with Teens.” I felt the presenters were good on their topics and were talking more specifically toward an older generation but it was ok to be there.

Yesterday, I went to the presentation on treating Cybersex problems with the family. The presentation was given by Dr. Stephanie Carnes, the daughter of Patrick Carnes, an author of Don’t Call it Love and Out of the Shadows. She was sharp and thorough in her review of the literature and information that she provided and also I was especially struck by the amount she uses Art Therapy and how to use it to provide insight and metaphors into the feelings and situations of many sex addicts lives. I also felt that it could apply to many in the chemical / drug dependency work that I do and also with other addictions.

Happy Halloween. I received a great message from Oscar and Lily wishing me a happy Halloween. They were very excited to be Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

Well it is about time that I post something about our trip to California. We loved seeing all of our friends and ward members in Redlands, California. We stayed with some good friends, the LeSueurs. Oscar and Lily loved playing with Claire. We enjoyed our few days there.

We had to switch out our rental van from Enterprise because the air conditioning didn’t work. Although a hassle to do there, we were compensated handsomely. They took care of us and I’d recommend Enterprise to anyone. They have excellent rates and also great customer service, at least the South Provo, Utah office.

Despite that we enjoyed riding in the 2007 Toyota Sienna as opposed 2008 Dodge Caravan. The seats were much more comfortable.

We then spent the next several days at Disneyland. We enjoyed the park very much.

We stayed at the Paradise Pier hotel. We enjoyed breakfast with many Disney Characters at Goofy’s Kitchen.

We enjoyed the pool at both Paradise Pier hotel and the Disneyland hotel.

We loved Disneyland and Downtown Disney. We loved the several Jamba Juices that we got while there.

We also enjoyed the trip thoroughly. And you can best see our experience through the photos we took. Check out flickr photo set here. It is large.

As I posted yesterday, my dad was headed downhill. I know I have let many know of my dad’s turn for the worse. Thank you for your kind words. I am sad to say that my dad passed this morning about 7am. We are happy that he didn’t suffer long when he’d lost consciousness.

Thank you for your prayers. The funeral will be on Tuesday morning at 11 AM if you can make it. It will be in Delta, UT at the intersection of 2nd North and 3rd West in Delta.

Many wonderful friends of my mom and dad have come by both before and after my dad’s passing to wish us well. They have confirmed for us the legacy of love, faith, and service that my father is leaving behind for us as family and posterity.

May we keep the faith and return to our roots as we came into this world.
