A few memories from our family to you.

I am saying hello from the blues and rock’n'roll city of Memphis. I’d like to go to the Civil Rights Museum sometime while I’m here. I’d also like to go to the Music Museum here. Graceland is in the area which would be a lot of fun to go see. Maybe tomorrow.
Thus far while I’ve been here we’ve had a good time enjoying the AAMFT Conference. I presented my poster presentation this morning. I came away with a list of people that were interested in receiving more information about my research on anxiety disorders and their associated costs. I guess a lot depends on the people that are interested in the research.

Maybe even though one researcher or journal might not be interested in my research; maybe another would be. Even if Family Relations didn’t accept the article on anxiety disorders; maybe I’ll submit it to Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy and see what they suggest.
With that said, I would like to say that of the presentations I’ve been to so far I have enjoyed a couple of them very much. One by my colleague and friend, Jeff Jackson and Carlo, a Maryland student, was on ethical decision making using a systems-oriented approach was excellent. Jeff, you’re thorough and excellent. It reminded me just how much ethical issues are not easy to figure out and how to handle and address them in an agency setting, such as I am doing in my clinical work at Outback right now.

Another presentation was pleasant on “Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll: The Joys of Working with Teens.” I felt the presenters were good on their topics and were talking more specifically toward an older generation but it was ok to be there.

Yesterday, I went to the presentation on treating Cybersex problems with the family. The presentation was given by Dr. Stephanie Carnes, the daughter of Patrick Carnes, an author of Don’t Call it Love and Out of the Shadows. She was sharp and thorough in her review of the literature and information that she provided and also I was especially struck by the amount she uses Art Therapy and how to use it to provide insight and metaphors into the feelings and situations of many sex addicts lives. I also felt that it could apply to many in the chemical / drug dependency work that I do and also with other addictions.

Happy Halloween. I received a great message from Oscar and Lily wishing me a happy Halloween. They were very excited to be Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

This years conference was excellent. I was able to see and many friends from Loma Linda and BYU, as well as family therapy researchers and presenters from previous conferences. I had a great time. I know Marlene was very appreciative that Rachel came to hang out and help around the house and with the kids. That made my absence much more bearable. The presentations went well of our research. Many were interested in the cost-effectiveness research that I am doing with Dr. Crane with anxiety disorders. In addition, the most popular poster and research had to be our Empirically Supported Treatments presentation about what models/or types of treatment (e.g., emotionally-focused therapy, behavioral treatments, etc.) within the field of marriage and family therapy have the most evidence that supports their use with a wide variety of mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety disorders, depression, etc.). We had many people want to know more about the research and have us email them some of our findings. They also looked forward to its publication and thought that it was a good direction for the field to be taking.Go to see my name on the AAMFT site. There were about 100 posters so that fastest way to see my name is to press the “control” key and the “f” key (or with a mac the “command” and the “f”) and then type “scoville” and you should be taken to three different poster presentations. (or click on this link http://www.aamft.org/resources/Product_Events/Annual/AC_PosterSessions.asp)We had a lot of fun. In addition to eating out (e.g., Bubba Gump’s was probably my favorite-fish and shrimp were excellent) we also played a Star Wars board game and talked. It was nice to see Ben Erwin, Steve Stutzman, and Triston and Nate (I see them a little more frequently though).I enjoyed seeing Donna (my first supervisor in my first therapy clinic from California) and many of the students and professors from Loma Linda University’s marriage and family therapy master’s and PhD programs. I miss seeing them. The weather was great. Nice and comfortable (although it did have more humidity). We watched the great Hawaii vs. San Jose State game. Hawaii pulled out the win in double overtime. Loved the suspense. We didn’t get the BYU game so that was sad not to see them win. However, I look forward to the next two games and have Marlene, Oscar and Lily come. It will be fun.I’ve got to run to class. See you later.I love the new Radiohead album “In Rainbows.” Buy it for your own price at www.inrainbows.com.

The past month has been a busy one for us. We have been doing quite a bit. I have been busy with projects at school — completing research for presentation this coming month. Marlene and the kids have been busy around the house, with preschool, and the pregnancy sickness and getting things ready for winter and the new baby to come.

Oscar and Lily are very excited about the prospect of a new little one in our home and helping Mom with the new baby.

This was a nice weekend. We listened to conference and really enjoyed the talks. I, in particular, liked Elder Eyring’s (*now President Eyring) talk in the priesthood session on getting answers to prayers. I am excited that Elder Eyring was called as a member of the first presidency. Marlene and I have always enjoyed listening to him and feeling the spirit as we did. I also enjoyed Elder Bednar’s talk. Lastly, President Hinckley gave a great talk on the prophet Joseph Smith in Sunday’s morning session. I can’t wait to listen and read those talks again (lds.org already has the mp3’s available to download for most of the sessions).

The family had planned on coming with me to my conference in Long Beach, CA this coming week, however, we decided that we would forgo that trip and that Aunt Rachel is going to come up and visit with Marlene and the kids while I’m away. Marlene and I will be making a trip to NYC and Philadelphia for a conference the week before Thanksgiving this year. It should be a lot of fun (thanks to both Grandparents who will be tag-teaming to watch our kids).

That is good for now.
